Kissamos - shoppingKastelli 0304300002-02
In Kaliviani are no supermarkets or other shops. In the kafeneio you can by cigarettes, Croissants, chocolate and tomato chips, so we go for shopping to Kissamos like all the other villages around. The nice and charming shopping mile named “Agora” waits for you to discover it! In some of the shops you feel the time has stopped somewhere in the past. In the old shoe shops pile up hundreds of shoe boxes so you hardly can find the seller. If you have found him, why don’t you give him (and yourself) pleasure starting a little deal? Ask for some shoes in your size. Sure he will find a pair for you, maybe not the colour you asked for but in your size and maybe you like them and buy them. Can you imagine better memories at these Holidays? Or go to the barbers shop to cut your beard or even your hair like my old lovely but also vain father did ones; afterwards he probably didn’t like it much but never tells a word about it. Back at home he couldn’t stop telling this little story to everyone (his hair was a little bit longer in-between). So if you risk leaving the normal tourist tours, in the little shops of Kissamos begins contact between people you will never forget.

In the Agora there is also a shop who sells newspapers from all over the world.
Who wants to cook on his own will find good meat at the butcher’s “Ta endeka adelfia” (The eleven brothers). This shop is a bit hidden near the central bus stop. It’ opens until the late night. Lassi likes them too because she takes a benefit – a plastic bag full of bones.
Fish is expensive, have a look at the prices per kilo; the Mediterranean is high frequented fishing area by big companies so there is not much left for the local fishermen. Once, to feed his family a fisherman needs a boat filled with fish each fishing tour. Now he fishes 3 to 5 little boxes full of fish to support his family. Corresponding to that the fish has to got high prices. To eat fine fish became a status symbol. Only the small fishes are eaten by everyone, but unfortunately they don’t get chance to grow up.
Fruits and vegetable are offered in many shops in Kissamos. It looks tasty, but washes it before eating – here they use high doses of insecticide. A small company, called ASPERSA deals with biological cultivated fruits and vegetables, but they don’t run a shop its own. Have a look at the supermarkets, some of them offers products from ASPERSA. Have a look at the labels. The most of the production goes to Athens and also in other nations. The next bio-shop I know is near the bus station in Chania.
The closing times of the shops are different all over the year. In the morning all shops are open. In summer the supermarket and many other shops are open until late night (22:00 or later, depending on the owner). All shops are closed between 14:00 and 18:00. Some of them open only every second afternoon.
